Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity

Here is more information on the metabolic syndrome. It never seems to stop. It really is an important syndrome however for weight gain and all the other subsequent complications of excess weight. Journal of Cardiovascular Nurs, 2006 Jul-Aug; 21(4):285-90

The metabolic syndrome has become one of the leading clinical issues discussed by physicians and the media, leading to increased public awareness to this potentially catastrophic multiplex risk factor for cardiovascular disease. With increasing prevalence in the United States, the metabolic syndrome has been equated to cigarette smoking as a contributing factor to premature cardiovascular heart disease and one of the underlying causes of type 2 diabetes.

The identification and modification of the root causes, overweight/obesity, physical inactivity, and the closely associated condition, insulin resistance, needs to be one of the initial strategies that are addressed by the clinician.

The realization of this situation has opened up major therapeutic potential for both weight loss and avoiding complications of extra weight.

Metabolic Syndrome

The debate continues on what constitutes the metabolic syndrome in what it means to those who have it. Circulation 2005 12;112(24):3713-21. The U.S. National Education Program, the World Health Organization, International Diabetes Foundation and others continue the debate. The issue boils down to what it means to the individual who has it. Biochem. Soc. Trans.. (200533, (1041-1044).

There now seems to be three basic outcomes or diseases that may be at risk, Diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer's disease or cardiovascular disease.

There probably will be several mechanisms in the acceleration of all these problems. It will be sometime before these are delineated. The severity of the outcomes makes it high priority research. The attack on this syndrome is an attack on all three of these outcomes. Although it will be decades before it's proven, it’s likely that you can go a long way to reduce your chances of these disorders. And you can lose a lot of weight along the way.
